Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Sun Weidong and US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink have held a constructive dialogue on the countries’ bilateral relations in the Asia Pacific, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
Sun and Kritenbrink met in Washington on Wednesday to discuss US-Chinese consultations on issues pertaining to the Asia-Pacific region.
“The two sides had candid, in-depth and constructive exchange of views on China-US relations, regional situation in the Asia-Pacific, respective regional policies, and international and regional issues of mutual interest,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Chinese vice minister also expressed Beijing’s position on the Taiwan issue, saying that the one-China principle is ”bedrock” of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He added that Beijing-Washington cooperation in the Asia-Pacific “serves the interests of both countries and meets the common expectations of regional countries.”
“The two sides agreed to maintain communication on Asia-Pacific affairs,” the statement read.
Sun also expressed China’s position concerning the pursuit of “the so-called ‘Indo-Pacific Strategy’ by the US and the South China Sea.”
On the same day, the Chinese vice minister met with US Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, the ministry added, without providing further details.
