Toyo Solar commissions pilot production in Hawassa SEZ

The Japanese company Toyo Solar, which has invested $60 million in the Hawassa Special Economic Zone to produce various solar panels, has completed the installation of machinery and has begun pilot production.

The CEO of the Industrial Parks Development Corporation of Ethiopia (IPDC), Fisseha Yitegesu (PhD), visited the general operations of the Japanese firm, which is currently producing pilot products in the Hawassa Special Economic Zone.

CEO Fisseha assured his corporation’s continued support to the company to fully enter the production process.

In response, the Japanese company’s officials stated that Toyo Solar will complete its construction work and begin the full-scale production by mid-March.

It is worth noting that Toyo Solar signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) in October 2024 to invest 60 million USD in establishing its first solar cells manufacturing facility in Ethiopia, and it is reported that the company’s products will be exported to the Middle East, India and the United States.

Toyo Solar has taken over three hectares of leased land and a manufacturing shed in the Hawassa Special Economic Zone to set up its current facility.

When the company enters the production process at full capacity, it is stated that it will create permanent job opportunities for more than 1,000 Ethiopians.
