Guangzhou Automobile Corporation (GAC), a Chinese state-controlled vehicle manufacturing company, together with Huajian Group, today declared that it is set to start assembling electric vehicles in Ethiopia soon.
GAC’s decision was revealed during a discussion between Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime and a Chinese delegation, consisting of Huajian Group and GAC senior leadership, in Addis Ababa today.
The discussions mainly focused on the prospect of assembling electric vehicles in Ethiopia.
During the discussion, Minister Alemu remarked that favorable policy and market conditions have been facilitated for foreign firms engaged in the production and assembly of electric vehicles in Ethiopia.
The discussion further explored ways for GAC Motors can start producing electric vehicle chargers in Ethiopia on a large scale.
For his part, the head of the delegation Mr. Zhang Huarong disclosed that GAC Motors has decided to invest in the electric vehicle assembly sector in Ethiopia and will soon start assembling E-vehicles in the East African nation.
Note that Guangzhou Automobile Corporation (GAC) signed an MoU agreement with Huajian Group, a Chinese company operating in Ethiopia Beijing in April 2024 to set up investment in electric vehicles in Ethiopia.
On that occasion, delegates of the Ethiopian government, the Guangzhou Municipal Government, and the Huajian Group also visited the GAC Group.
In that regard, today’s visit by the Chinese delegation can be considered as a move to translate the MOU into action.
