Ethiopia’s government has proposed a budget of Birr 971.2 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, a significant increase of 21.1% compared to the 2023/24 budget. This draft plan was presented to the parliament by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide.
The proposed budget outlines how the government intends to spend its resources. The largest portion, 46.5% or Birr 451.3 billion, is allocated to the regular budget, which covers ongoing government operations. This represents a 21.9% increase from the budget for the current fiscal year.
Within the regular budget, Birr 128.2 billion (28.2%) is dedicated to employee salaries, allowances, and other miscellaneous payments. The remaining 71.8% (Birr 321.4 billion) will support operational expenses.
Capital expenditure, which funds infrastructure projects and other essential investments, is allocated Birr 283.2 billion. Additionally, Birr 236.7 billion is designated to support regional governments, with Birr 14 billion birr specifically earmarked for regional initiatives promoting sustainable development.
