The Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise (ETRE) is set to introduce a cashless payment system at selected toll gates this fiscal year, as part of Ethiopia’s broader digitalization agenda. The initiative also includes digitizing road data to streamline administrative processes and enhance efficiency.
The rollout of cashless payments will be gradual, addressing challenges such as limited public awareness and technological constraints. To overcome these hurdles, ETRE aims to improve road traffic control mechanisms to reduce accidents and optimize service delivery, while still offering traditional payment options.
Procurement for the necessary payment technologies has begun, with selected companies supplying materials. The final choice between systems such as Telebirr or bank switching will be made after technology installations are completed.
ETRE operates three branches across the country, providing 24/7 services including public awareness, emergency response, and road clearing. The digital transition aims to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase transparency in revenue management. The enterprise said it was dedicated to meeting international road standards, with ongoing efforts in road maintenance, modernization, and standardization. It emphasizes the need for collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Ethiopian Road Administration, to expand the toll road network.
