Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) announced that its dams were fully replenished after the recent rainy season, ensuring sufficient water for power generation to meet this year’s ambitious targets.
According to Tiruwork Shiferaw, EEP’s Planning Bureau and Power Plant Operation Sector Manager, the dams have accumulated enough water to support full-capacity electricity generation. The company is actively managing water levels to optimize output and ensure sustainability.
Eight dams, including Gilgel Gibe I, Finca’a, Melka Wakena, Tana Beles, Tekeze, Genale Dawa, Koka, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, are reported to be full, while Gilgel Gibe III and Amerti Neshie have adequate reserves. EEP aims to generate over 25,000 gigawatts (GW) of electricity per hour in the current fiscal year and is undertaking renovations to enhance water utilization efficiency.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) reported a surge in customers, reaching 4.9 million. The company plans to connect 600,000 additional customers this fiscal year, with 167,952 new connections already established since July 2024.
Currently, 8,245 rural towns have access to electricity, an increase from 667 two decades ago. Additionally, 25 mini-grid projects are under construction, with three already completed, benefiting over 74,000 people.
