The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) has announced that the country’s energy generation capacity has exceeded 6,000MW.
Ethiopia’s renewable energy strategy extends beyond generation to include infrastructure development. The country has built over 20,000 kilometers of transmission lines and expanded distribution networks to more than 150,000 kilometers, enhancing energy accessibility and connecting more communities to the grid.
The government is integrating renewable energy across sectors, including a bold shift in transportation. Ethiopia has banned the import of engine-powered vehicles in favor of electric vehicles (EVs), reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving foreign currency previously spent on fuel.
