Ethiopian Airlines is set to launch a new airline, Air Congo, in partnership with the Congolese government, according to Group CEO Mesfin Tasew.
With Ethiopian Airlines holding a 49% stake, this joint venture aims to expand the airline’s presence in Africa. Scheduled to start operations in early December 2024, Air Congo will initially utilize two Boeing 737-800 aircraft from Ethiopian Airlines, with plans to grow the fleet to six within a year.
Mesfin emphasized that Air Congo is a strategic step for Ethiopian Airlines, leveraging the growing demand for air travel across the continent. The partnership builds on Ethiopian Airlines’ successful ventures with other African carriers, such as Togo’s ASKY, Zambia Airways, and Malawi Airlines. While the Congolese government will hold a majority 51% stake, Ethiopian Airlines will manage Air Congo’s operations.
This new airline is anticipated to enhance connectivity and support economic growth in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country with high demand for air travel due to its large population.
