The Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority has announced plans to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations every 50 to 120 kilometers nationwide. This initiative aims to support the growing use of EVs and ensure long-distance travel convenience.
Bahru Oljra, Executive Director of Energy Sector Control, has approved a new directive outlining licensing, charging tariffs, power supply levels, and security standards for EV charging systems.
Three types of charging stations are recognized: home-based, public, and business-operated facilities. Bahru noted that site permits have yet to be issued but emphasized that existing stations must secure licenses within six months of the directive’s approval.
Complementing this effort, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics plans to transition 432,000 gas-powered vehicles to electric ones within a decade. With 100,000 EVs already in use, Ethiopia is accelerating its shift toward sustainable transport in cities and towns nationwide.
