The Ethiopian Roads Administration has launched a study to construct four expressways connecting Addis Ababa to key regional cities.
The planned routes will link the capital to Dessie, Jimma, Debre Markos, and Nekemte to enhance connectivity and drive economic growth.
According to Frew Bekele, Director of Engineering Procurement, the expressways will pass through challenging mountainous terrain, requiring significant investment. To manage costs, the government has opted for a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Feasibility studies and preliminary designs are nearing completion.
Each project, averaging over 300 kilometers, will be built in phases. Proposals for the Addis Ababa–Jimma and Addis Ababa–Debre Markos expressways have already been submitted to the PPP Board at the Ministry of Finance, with the others to follow.
The Ministry of Finance’s approval will be the next step before construction begins. These expressways are expected to improve transportation infrastructure, facilitate trade, and accelerate regional development across Ethiopia.
