The Ministry of Agriculture announced that Ethiopia has produced 6.3 billion chicken eggs and 192,000 tons of fish in the first nine months of the current fiscal year under the Lemat Tirufat Program.
Launched in 2022 the Lemat Tirufat Program aims to boost agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and modernize the food system. According to State Minister of Agriculture Fikru Regasa (PhD), progress has been made since the program’s inception.
A major focus of the initiative has been expanding poultry production. Fikru (PhD) revealed that 90 million one-day-old chicks were distributed to communities across the country over the past nine months, more than double the number distributed during the same period last year. As a result, chicken meat production reached 128,000 tons, alongside the 6.3 billion eggs recorded.
Fish production is another key pillar of the Lemat Tirufat Program. The Ministry reported that 192,000 tons of fish were harvested, supported by efforts to create favorable conditions for small-scale fish farming in backyards, small spaces, ponds, and natural water bodies. To strengthen the sector, the government has distributed 8.3 million fish fry and enhanced the capacity of fish hatchery centers in Bahir Dar, Batu, Arba Minch, Hawassa, and Sebeta. Modern vehicles have also been deployed to transport fish fry efficiently.
