Ethiopia has officially become the 88th member of the WorldSkills organization, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance its technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system.
The Ministry of Labor and Skills announced the membership, highlighting the two-year process leading to this achievement. Minister Mufferiat Kamil emphasized the economic, political, and social benefits of joining, including increased professional exchanges, stronger industry ties, and enhanced skill-sharing capabilities.
As a new member, Ethiopia will participate in the 47th International Skills Competition in France next September, competing in three categories. The country also plans to actively share its expertise with the global skills community.
Ethiopia’s young population, with 70% under 30, is a key focus of the country’s skills development strategy. By investing in its youth, Ethiopia aims to create two million high-quality jobs annually.
The membership aligns with Ethiopia’s national skills strategy, which emphasizes expanding access, ensuring quality, building institutional capacity, engaging stakeholders, and improving the TVET legal framework.
In addition to WorldSkills membership, Ethiopia will join WorldSkills Africa, a regional platform launched in February 2024. This further reinforces the country’s commitment to skills development and aligns with Africa’s Agenda 2063.
The official ratification of Ethiopia’s membership will take place at the WorldSkills General Assembly in Lyon, France, this September.
