Ethiopia: House of Peoples’ Representatives Approves Birr 582 Billion Supplementary Budget

The House of Peoples’ Representatives has approved a supplementary budget of Birr 582 billion for the current fiscal year. The decision was made during the council’s 6th regular meeting after Finance Minister Tesfaye Beljge (PhD) presented the draft budget proposal.

Tesfaye emphasized the critical importance of the additional budget and provided a breakdown of its allocation. He explained that Birr 393 billion is earmarked for regular expenditures, Birr 70 billion will be allocated to capital projects, and Birr 119 billion is set aside to adjust various expenses. The supplementary budget includes Birr 185 billion for domestic and foreign debt repayment, Birr 208 billion for social subsidies, and Birr 60 billion to expand the social safety net. An additional Birr 10 billion is designated for adjusting capital projects, while Birr 119 billion will address expenditure adjustments.

Following discussions on the draft proposal, the supplementary budget was approved by a majority vote, with three members opposing the motion and five abstaining.
