The Ethiopian government announced plans to commence the construction of a railway link between the Awash fuel depot and Djibouti’s Horizon Terminal in the coming Ethiopian year (2017).
This project is expected to enhance the oil-loading services provided by the terminal to Ethiopia. The decision to proceed with the project was made following discussions between Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and a delegation led by Djibouti’s Minister of Energy, Younis Ali Guedi. The talks centered on enhancing the oil loading services provided by the Horizon Terminal to Ethiopia.
A subsequent review by technical committees from both countries led to the signing of a construction contract in September. The railway is expected to improve the transportation of fuel between the two countries, boosting trade and economic growth.
High-level officials, including Ethiopia’s Prime Minister’s Macroeconomic Adviser Ambassador Girma Biru, and Ethiopian Investment Holding CEO Dr. Brook Taye, were present during the discussions, underscoring the importance of the project for both nations.
