Ethiopia is keen to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing Chinese coffee market, as China continues to emerge as one of the top destinations for Ethiopian coffee exports. The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) emphasized this goal during recent discussions with Chinese business representatives interested in sourcing Ethiopian coffee.
Officials from ECTA and Ethiopian coffee exporters highlighted the increasing significance of the Chinese market, with China now ranking among the top 10 importers of Ethiopian coffee. Over the past few years, the volume of coffee exports to China has grown steadily, with an annual growth rate of 27%, driven by a rising number of Chinese consumers and the growing popularity of Ethiopian coffee.
Ethiopia’s coffee export revenue reached 1.43 billion U.S. dollars in the last fiscal year, which ended on July 7, 2024. The country aims to increase this figure to 2 billion dollars in the current 2024/2025 fiscal year.
Known as the birthplace of Arabica coffee, Ethiopia is one of Africa’s largest producers and exporters of coffee, and its beans are renowned worldwide for their rich, diverse flavors, including fruity, chocolatey, and winy notes. As Ethiopia continues to expand its coffee market in China, officials are optimistic about the potential for further growth in this key export sector.
