The Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) has officially launched the re-construction of the Kality Dry Port and Terminal following the signing of an agreement with the Ethiopian Engineering Corporation. The agreement was signed by ESL CEO Beriso Amelo (PhD) and Ethiopian Engineering Corporation CEO Shimelis Eshetu.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Beriso highlighted that the new terminal will accommodate a large number of heavy vehicles, addressing long-standing inefficiencies faced by both workers and customers. He assured that the project would be completed in a short period and would provide a comfortable and efficient working environment.
Shimelis Eshetu affirmed the Ethiopian Engineering Corporation’s commitment to delivering the project on time and with high quality. The construction, which has been allocated a budget of over Birr 510 million, will include the terminal’s inner courtyard, a container terminal, and other essential facilities. The project is expected to be completed within six months.
In a parallel effort to strengthen Ethiopia’s trade and logistics capacity, the Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) Corporation has announced efforts to acquire six new cargo vessels. Two of the six ships are expected to be acquired in the current fiscal year. These include ultramax dry bulk carriers, each with a 62,000-ton capacity. Additionally, the expansion will feature the ETU container ship, capable of transporting between 3,000 and 4,000 containers. The remaining four vessels are set to be acquired in the coming years.
The newly acquired ships are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing Ethiopia’s import and export capabilities. Currently, Ethiopia’s maritime fleet consists of 10 ships, including Abay II, which has a 63,000-ton capacity, while the others range between 26,000 and 27,000 tons.
