Ethiopia has started exporting electricity to Tanzania through Kenya for the first time on a trial basis, according to an announcement by Ethiopian Electric Power.
Moges Mekonnen, Director of Corporate Communications at Ethiopian Electric Power, explained that this followed the signing of an electricity supply agreement between Ethiopia and Tanzania. A transmission line with a capacity of 200,000 megawatts has been completed on the Ethiopian side, and currently, 200 megawatts of electricity are being transmitted. Moges added that the line could carry more power without requiring further construction.
The Managing Director of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company, John Mativo (PhD), also confirmed via social media the successful completion of the trial transmission from Ethiopia to Kenya.
Ethiopia earned over USD 102 million from electricity exports to neighboring countries in the 2022/23 fiscal year. The country began selling power to Kenya, in addition to Djibouti and Sudan, in November 2022, as part of its strategy to enhance regional economic integration through energy cooperation.
