Ethiopia has taken a step towards expanding its horticultural exports by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). The agreement aims to enhance cooperation in the production and export of avocados, onions, and potatoes.
The announcement was made during the COMESA Horticulture Forum held in Addis Ababa, which brought together key stakeholders from the region. The forum focused on connecting Ethiopian horticultural products with both regional and international markets.
Abdullah Negash, CEO of the Horticulture Sector at the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of the MoU in reducing Ethiopia’s reliance on foreign exchange. By boosting exports within the COMESA trade zone, the country can strengthen its economy and create new opportunities for farmers and exporters.
Negash emphasized Ethiopia’s vast horticultural potential, encompassing flowers, vegetables, and fruits and stressed the need to leverage this potential to establish a strong foothold in the global market.
