The Addis Ababa Traffic Management Authority has announced that newly approved regulations for vehicle parking services in the city will be implemented this week. The new rules aim to optimize the use of parking spaces, particularly those underutilized in buildings, and increase the overall supply of vehicle parking.
The regulations apply to various parking facilities, including roadside, underground, and above-ground parking areas, as well as modern parking structures in and around buildings. The authority emphasized that private entities providing parking services must obtain a qualification certificate to ensure their facilities meet the required standards.
The new regulations also prohibit any organization or association from offering parking services without a valid service contract with the authority. Additionally, issuing unauthorized receipts or operating without proper documentation is strictly forbidden.
Service providers must wear designated uniforms, and transferring or leasing parking spaces to third parties outside the association is prohibited. The authority also banned the use of parking facilities for activities other than their intended purpose, as well as tampering with payment machines to generate illegal income. Users must also comply with the new rules, including displaying vehicle plates and paying the required fees. Parking in spaces reserved for diplomatic or disabled persons without proper authorization is prohibited.
Violations of these regulations will result in fines ranging from Birr 3,000 to 100,000, and in some cases, criminal charges may be applied depending on the severity of the offense.
