
Ethio Telecom announced its customer base has reached 80 million, driven by its efforts to enhance financial inclusion and support Ethiopia’s national development.
Speaking at the launch of ZTE Corporation’s Nubia Focus Pro 5G smartphone, Ethio Telecom Chief Marketing Officer Seid Arega highlighted the company’s recent achievements. He noted that 4G networks have been installed in 500 towns across Ethiopia, while the mobile money service, Telebirr, has attracted 51 million subscribers, solidifying Ethio Telecom’s position as a leading operator in Africa.
Seid also revealed plans to expand smartphone access, citing Ethiopia’s current smartphone penetration rate of 42%. The state-owned telecom is collaborating with ZTE Corporation to advance digital inclusion, increase 5G coverage, and establish a local phone assembly facility to facilitate affordable smartphone access.
ZTE Ethiopia CEO Vivian Chen emphasized the impact of the partnership, stating it will revolutionize the Ethiopian market by improving smartphone affordability through installment payment plans. She also highlighted ZTE’s investment of over USD 50 million in Ethiopia over the past two decades and the creation of 1,000 local jobs.
The event concluded with the launch of ZTE’s Nubia Focus Pro 5G, a water-resistant smartphone designed to enhance consumer convenience and drive technology adoption in Ethiopia.
