The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) and MasterCard have introduced a new range of plastic and virtual payment cards. The move aims to provide secure and seamless access to global digital payments for CBE customers.
CBE President Abe Sano emphasized that the new agreement with MasterCard represents a new era for banking in Ethiopia, offering both physical plastic cards and the convenience of instantly issued virtual cards through the mobile banking app. He highlighted the added security features and the ease of online applications for customers.
Mark Elliott, President of MasterCard Africa Division, underscored that the initiative is about more than just payments, but about empowering Ethiopians economically and contributing to the nation’s growing digital economy.
Customers can now apply for plastic cards at CBE branches or online, while virtual cards are available instantly via the bank’s mobile app. Both card types are accepted at millions of global merchants and feature enhanced security measures.
This initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy, aiming to broaden access to financial services and foster greater economic participation, furthering CBE’s ongoing digital transformation efforts.
