Coffee exports soar as government support bears fruit

The Ethiopian government’s increased attention to the country’s coffee sector has led to a significant surge in coffee exports, according to Sebsib Abafira, President of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA).

Speaking at the opening of Yoya Coffee’s newest outlet, Sebsib commended entrepreneurship efforts in the coffee sector, saying they are crucial in enhancing quality and value addition in the industry. The sector has seen a substantial increase in global market prices and attraction, with coffee exports generating the highest revenue in the last Ethiopian Fiscal Year.

According to Sebsib, Ethiopia has secured $908 million in the past six months alone, and he attributed the success to the government’s support for the sector. However, he emphasized the need for continued effort from all stakeholders to increase productivity and make the nation’s coffee more competitive.

Yoya Coffee Roaster Owner and Manager Dawit Tesfaye also attributed the sector’s growth to the recent macroeconomic reforms, which he said motivated coffee exporters and boosted the sector as a whole.

Dawit said Yoya Coffee aims to promote Ethiopia’s coffee at the global market and contribute to the growth of the sector, which is a major source of export revenue for the country.

The country aims to earn $2 billion from coffee exports in the current Ethiopian budget year by exporting over 400,000 tons of coffee.
