Authority Develops National E-Mobility Strategy to Advance Electric Vehicles

Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority (EPA) announced the development of a national e-mobility strategy aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.

The EPA recently hosted a panel discussion, in collaboration with the Ethio-Germany energy cooperation, focused on the integration of electric vehicles within Ethiopia’s green economy. The event drew ministry representatives, private stakeholders, and other dignitaries.

According to the reporter, an Ethiopian Newspaper, the strategy includes attracting international battery manufacturers to tap into Ethiopia’s cobalt and lithium resources. The newspaper also reported the government aimed to increase the number of electric vehicles to 500,000 by 2030, up from the 100,000 already on the roads. The strategy also includes introducing battery-powered agricultural and construction machinery.

Ethiopia’s 10-year plan targets 148,000 electric cars and 50,000 electric buses by 2030. Domestic EV assembly companies are also exploring local battery production using Ethiopian-sourced lithium.

EPA Director-General Sahrla Abdulahi highlighted the government’s ongoing initiatives to transform the petroleum sector into a sustainable e-mobility sector, contributing to Ethiopia’s socioeconomic growth. She noted the formation of a national steering committee and efforts to incentivize private sector investment in the EV industry.
