The Amhara Region’s Mineral Resources Bureau revealed that the region produced nearly 19,950 kilograms of opal and gold over the past nine months.
Mr. Tamrat Demse, Deputy Head of the Bureau, credits recent efforts focused on exploration and development. These initiatives include extensive research conducted by universities to attract investors and elevate the mining sector’s role in the region’s economic growth.
The Bureau highlighted the traditional mining methods used to produce the 19,950 kilograms delivered to the central market. Mr. Tamrat emphasized ongoing efforts to discover new resources, organize investors and local youth, and address challenges within the sector.
University collaboration has proven invaluable. Over 31 million square kilometers of land have been researched, revealing a treasure trove of 40 minerals. Gold, opal, lithium, manganese, nickel, and sulfur are some of the finds.
Looking ahead, attracting local and foreign investors is key. The Bureau is committed to transforming the mining sector into a powerful engine for economic growth. Desalegn Mola, Chairman of a local mining association, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the benefits experienced by members participating in legal mining practices.
The Bureau’s recent agreements with universities in Bahir Dar, Gondar, and Woldiya further solidify their commitment. This partnership will explore an additional 10,000 square kilometers, aiming to unlock the region’s full mining potential and discover even more resources.
